While reading, I found Andrews' idea about school and language being social events really interesting. This is something that we often forget. Our students spend most of their waking hours at school - with their teachers, but more importantly, with their friends. Therefore, if we approaching teaching language from a societal standpoint, we are more likely to get through and help our students see the impact of language in daily life. If we can teach our students the importance in differentiating language according to the occasion or audience, we are also preparing them for future interactions, such as job interviews or college essays.
